Movie sections and Flashbacks that are out of chronological order in the movie will be identified by Program Notes. It should also be noted that the story line and story sequence of events in the movie differs in many places from the story line in the manga. - PART ONE---THE END OF IT ALL
Sometimes, the only guide one has in the darkness, is a single point of light . . . . far, far in the distance.
Seventeen year old Shoya Ishida has no plans, whatsoever, for the future, except one. He is going to commit suicide. It's even marked on his calendar ! April 15th ! The rest of the month's days have been torn off ! Preliminary preparations are being accomplished. He quit his job on the 9th. On the 11th, he sold all of his possessions, mostly video games and their consoles, manga, and DVD's. Come the 14th, he withdrew all of his college savings from the bank, closed out the account, and upon putting the money in an envelope, placed it near the pillow of his mom's bed. That night, he dreams a dream, that shows him exactly what he is going to do.
Just before noontime of the 15th, dressed in a shirt, pants, and a business jacket, he quietly leaves home. He takes care of one last duty of personal business, and then walks to the center of a high bridge spanning the river that runs through the city. He stares at the clear, blue, briskly moving waters below, as he grasps the handrailing. The setting sun is coloring the sky all pink and blue. He knows what is going to happen next . . . . He will be standing on top of the handrail, motionless, with his arms outstretched for balance. Meanwhile, a group of boys on the bank of the river are shooting off fireworks in the darkening evening twilight. After seeing the last bottle rocket explode, he then will tip his body forward and downward . . . . in a moment, he feels the incredibly cold water engulf his body . . . .
He awakens at dawn, and begins to make his dream, still fresh in his mind, a reality.
- PART 2---AS THE OPENING CREDITS ROLL
( With the Opening Credits rolling on screen, the movie, in chronological order, begins here. It shows a series of short clips, that begin to show a thumbnail sketch about the kind of child Shoya Ishida is, beginning when he is about 12 years old. The song " My Generation ", by The Who, is playing in the background. )
Shoya Ishida is walking, or should one say, swaggering to school. His two male friends are with him, Kazuki Shimada and Keisuke Hirose; they make up a three person boy's street gang.
After school, on the way home, the three boys decide it would be fun to jump from a low bridge into the water below, which they promptly do. They now continue walking home, soaking wet !
On another day, they get sweets from a candy shop, and are outside, waiting at a cross-walk for the light to change. Across the street, waiting at the same cross-walk, are four cute girls that are in Shoya's class. Shoya stares at them intently with an eagle's eye. However, when the light changes to 'Walk' , both groups pass by each other, with no reaction whatsoever, except that when they are past one another, Shoya's eyes follow and gaze at the girl's booty, as he swallows a ramen noodle.
At home, which is the Ishida Beauty Salon, they pass by a young girl in the waiting area, somewhat disheveled, who is reading a magazine. Upstairs, in his bedroom, the three are all 'doing their own thing', with Shoya playing a video game.
At school, Shoya has a rubber band wrapped around his hand, and holding it like a pistol, shoots down a folded sheet of paper on an adjacent desk. The other two boys are onlookers, and laugh when the paper 'bites the dust'. Two girls are also looking, mildly interested.
After school, Shoya and Keisuke do a 'hand jive' together. Later, they all jump off of a bridge, into the water full of carp.
One day, Shoya captures a wet, dirty ground hog, getting himself also wet and dirty. Once home, he takes a peek at his older sisters bed, only to find her new boyfriend 'pumping iron' with a hand barbell.
One day, the three walk home with flowers in their mouths. Once home, for Shoya, it's right into playing video games.
Next morning, Shoya is once again swaggering though the school hallway, like a king on his way to his royal throne room. While the students are settling down at their desks in the homeroom, the teacher is out in the hallway, ready to usher into the classroom a new transfer student, an attractive, very cute twelve year old girl !
